Hanging Pictures on Wall Perfectly
Hang pictures straight and level Perfection is possible — if you know a few tricks
Hanging a single picture is as easy as nailing a hook to the wall. But when you want to hang two or more aligned with each other, things get complicated. Here’s how pros achieve perfection fast and frustration-free.
1. Level and align
Make paper patterns identical to the pictures, then establish a level line on the wall. An inexpensive laser level is perfect for this project, but a standard level will also work. When you’ve arranged the patterns perfectly, mark the top center of each with the corner of a sticky note as a reference point.
2. Find the hanger locations
Use two hangers for each picture for extra support and to help keep the picture from tipping. Stretch the hanger wire with two fingers spaced equally distant from the edges of the picture frame. Keep the wire parallel to the top of the frame. Measure the distance between your fingertips.
3. Find the distance from the top edge
Leave one finger in place and measure from the wire to the top. Use this and the previous dimension to position the picture hangers on the wall.
4. Transfer the hanger measurements to the wall
Find the hanger positions by measuring down from the sticky note and to each side from the center. An inexpensive level with inches marked on it makes this much easier. Keep the hangers level.
5. Nail the hooks
Then line up the bottom of the hooks with the marks and drive the picture-hanger nails through the angled guides on the hooks.
6. Hang the picture
Slip the wire over both hooks. Slide the picture sideways across the wires until it’s level. Use the same process to hang the remaining pictures.
